Ingredient Standards
At Blended Pastures Farmstead, we keep our formulas simple, transparent, and purpose-driven. Every product is built around traditional ingredients chosen for performance, skin feel, and straightforward routines.
Our Tallow Standard
We make our soaps and body care with pasture-raised beef tallow from cattle that are grass-fed and grain-finished. This matters because it supports the rich, creamy lather and classic “bar soap” feel that tallow is known for.
- Pasture-raised: Our cattle are raised on pasture.
- Grass-fed, grain-finished: Grass-fed with a grain-finished period.
- Traditional ingredient: Tallow is time-tested for a dense, satisfying lather and a smooth skin feel.
Our “Short List” Approach
We prefer a short ingredient list whenever possible. If an ingredient doesn’t improve how the product works or feels, we leave it out.
Oils & Butters We Use
To balance cleansing and conditioning, we may use a small set of complementary oils alongside tallow, such as:
- Olive oil
- Other simple plant oils (when needed for lather, glide, or texture)
Lye (Saponification)
Cold process soap requires lye (sodium hydroxide) to turn oils into soap. There is no lye left in a properly made bar—it is fully consumed during saponification, creating the final soap.
Fragrance & Essential Oils
Some bars are naturally scented with essential oils or a natural fragrance blend. Others are intentionally light or subtle. We aim for balanced scents that feel clean and wearable—never overpowering.
What We Avoid
We keep things simple and avoid unnecessary extras, especially when they don’t improve the bar’s performance.
- Overly complicated additive “cocktails”
- Trendy ingredients that don’t meaningfully improve results
- Harsh cleansing bases that leave skin feeling stripped
Allergens & Sensitivities
Every person’s skin is different. If you have sensitivities, we recommend:
- Choosing lightly scented or subtle-scent bars
- Reviewing the ingredient list on each product page
- Patch testing when trying a new product
How to Read Our Labels
- Pasture-raised, grass-fed, grain-finished refers to how our cattle are raised and finished.
- Fully saponified means the lye has been used up to create soap.
- Essential oils / natural fragrance indicates how the bar is scented (when applicable).

Ingredient Standards FAQs
Is your tallow “grass-fed”?
Our cattle are pasture-raised, grass-fed, and grain-finished. We use that full phrase so it’s clear and accurate. Plus the grain finish while still being in the pastures makes happy fat cows!
Is there lye in your finished soap?
No. Lye is required to make soap, but it is fully consumed during saponification when properly formulated and cured.
Are your soaps heavily scented?
Not typically. Many customers prefer balanced scents, and some bars are intentionally light and subtle.
